Okay so this is my first post and i've tried to put in my bio etc and the blog just won't accept what i've written. I'll try not to take it personally and assume it's a technology based problem not the fact that i suck.
I moved back to Toronto late last September, i was happy to see family but i admit not overly thrilled about being back in the big smoke. Now after almost a year of being back, i think i've figured out why.
It's fine. Toronto is fine. Nothing really sticks out as terrible or fabulous. Nothing really sticks out except for the CN Tower, but come on; except for lame tourists coming out of buses or people who do that stair walkathon who really goes there? It's big but still it's just fine, not fricking fabulous. If it was a strip joint or you could throw wine glasses of the balcony it would be.
I'd almost like Toronto to stick out for being bad at something. I have lived in a few cities; Adelaide, Australia is quote "great for famlies" or 'the city of churces' which we all know is code for f**king boring. It actually wasn't too bad, the quality of people made up for the lack of hot spots. Then i lived in a teensy town in South Africa which had fabulously surfing and probablly some of the biggest men i've ever seen on the planet. I think it's the mix of the African sun and Dutch ancestry. Anyway then Joburg, which is supposed to be famous for crime. You know you step a hundred feet off the plane and you have a gun at your head. That wasn't my experience; fricking fabulous houses, restaurants that make Toronto look like Hamilton and people who have opinions and sometimes even raise their voices. Yes they wear too much gold; but can you really blame them?
So now i'm home for good or who knows...but for a little while at least and I'm not sure exactly what is great about Toronto. I want it to great.
Okay i'll give it the St. Lawrence Market, it's pretty damn good as fair as markets go, probably in the top ten but there really is not a good croissant in the entire building. A great market needs a croissant or at least a muffin that doesn't include banana, bran or chocolate chip. Some creativity please. At Adelaide's market they had gorgeous muffins served in baby flower pots and had flavours like walnut coffee crunch.
There is walking. I love to walk and you can walk in Toronto, not like you can walk New York with a fever of energy and endless amusement of what's happening around you but safe, good walking all the same.
I think after living overseas for a few years i've lost my secret list of places and reasons that make it great...
any suggestions...
